We are a collective of historians, software designers, and heritage researchers from Japan and the United Kingdom who share a common vision of applying Virtual Reality technology to preserving the history and heritage of Hashima Island, known colloquially as Battleship Island.

The University of Tokyo Studies on Asia is an Open Access, English-language research monograph series with the mandate to promote excellence in Asian studies conducted in Asia. It is published by the University of Tokyo Institute of Advanced Studies on Asia, in partnership with Springer/Nature, and funded by donations through The University of Tokyo Future Society Initiative. We aim to make available the results of the best Asian studies scholarship to anyone who can connect to the internet.

A Cultural History of East Asia is a six-volume examination of the human experience in East Asia, from ancient times to the twentieth century. It explores 3500 years of history from the rise of civilization in East Asia to the advent of modernity and beyond. The collection of essays collectively examines the cultural sphere that developed from China across the greater East Asian region, what specialists refer to as the ‘Sinosphere’, as a geospatial zone where the flow of ideas, peoples and things to and from China exists independent of the political controls exerted by the Chinese state.

The University of Tokyo International Publishing Initiative (UT-IPI) supports the publication of academic books in English by scholars in the humanities and social sciences at the University of Tokyo.
